Travelling...
Tuesday, March 3, 2009 at 08:25PM Greetings from Virginia Beach, Virginia! I arrived here at around 5:30pm and am staying overnight at a beautiful hotel called the Founder's Inn in preparation for my appearance on the 700 Club tomorrow morning. It was a beautiful day to fly - lots of sunshine, although it was cold. In fact, here in VA Beach, it's in the upper 20s, which for them, is VERY cold!
Speaking of travelling, one of the the challenges life often throws our way is trying to eat healthy while we travel. I know this is more difficult for some than others - especially if you have a job that requires frequent travelling. I've learned a few tricks I'd like to share with you...
First, plan ahead. Get some healthy fruits, baby carrots, granola bars, etc., and put them in your carry-on bag. You can bring items like those through security at an airport, just not liquid items or drinks.
Second, if you must purchase food at an airport, go to one of the "cafeteria style" places. My experience is that most airports are now offering fruit, yogurt, a number of salads, and some other healthy fare at most of these locations. Stay away from the sit-down chain places, because even though they have a few healthy items on the menu, you'll probably be tempted by the burgers and fries - I know I would be!
Third, drink lots of water. Flying tends to dry the body out anyhow, so it will help keep you healthier overall, and hopefully keep the "hunger pangs" at bay.
Fourth, avoid the moving sidewalks and escalators. Walk as far as you can in the airport, and take the stairs when possible. If you have extra time between flights, take a walk down the concourse. Actually, my friend Emily and I once ran down the concourse at the airport in Atlanta. We had a blast, even though I was a bit worried a security guard was going to nab us! We also burned about 200 calories, I think. The concourse in Atlanta is more than 80 gates long!
Consider some of these ideas the next time you travel, and you won't arrive feeling bloated and weighed down. Good luck, and be sure to catch Joy Bauer and I on the 700 Club tomorrow!

Jon ~ I'm so excited to hear about your "adventure" on the 700 Club with Joy Bauer! I'm sure you are having a wonderful time, which includes focusing on your main goal: HELPING OTHERS with their battle of obesity!
Now that you've lost 230 pounds by living a healthy lifestyle, you surely know how to motivate individuals to do what you have done; and, it helps when people know that you've been there / done that!
Remember how proud ALL OF US MICHIGANDERS are of you, Jon, and we know this is "just the beginning" of a journey that was meant for you to take! I know we both agree that we have God to thank for that! Jodi Davis
