Helping Others is What it's All About!
Wednesday, December 2, 2009 at 09:06PM One of the great joys I now get to experience since losing 230 pounds is helping others who struggle with their weight do the same. I've spoken to several TOPS clubs, at civic events, at employee wellness events and more - all with one mission in mind - saving the lives of Michigan's citizens. Obesity is a killer, and if we don't actively work to combat it, America's life expectancy figures are going to take a rapid plunge!
I want to highlight three individuals in particular who have contacted me and asked for advice, help and support. I will devote a blog to each of them as I acquire pictures so you can see their progress too. It isn't rocket science folks - it's common sense. There is no magic "formula," pill or diet plan that's going to save you from your obesity. It takes a combination of common sense eating and moving your body.
I first met Valerie Long through her mom, Sharon, who works out at the same gym as I do. Val was considering joining a weight management program through Sparrow Hospital that focuses on weight reduction using a radical liquid diet plan and then gradually returning a person to solid food. I don't know enough about the program to offer any scientific criticism, and I'm sure there are people out there that have been successful with it. Personally, I'd rather still enjoy food and incorporate exercise rather than drinking some sort of magic liquid potion!
Val contacted me and asked me for advice. I told her what I had done, encouraged her to begin exercising and continued to offer advice and encouragement as needed. That's an important component to long-term weight loss also. I'm happy to say that Val has lost almost 40 pounds and is feeling GREAT! In the midst of her efforts, she also injured a knee creating an additional challenge for her to overcome. She made it through, though, and I am very proud of her - as her mom and the rest of her family. A before and after photo is posted below. Congratulations, Val - YOU ROCK!
